How do I actually apply?
Every German university picks one way for you to apply. Check the programme page — it will say which one. Here's what each means, in plain words.
Directly to the university
You apply on the university's own online portal.
- Create an account on the university's application portal
- Upload your documents and submit before the deadline
- The university checks everything itself
💶 Usually free (some universities charge a small fee)
Official infouni-assist (full application)
uni-assist checks your documents and forwards your application to the university.
- Apply on My Assist and pay the fee
- uni-assist checks your certificates are complete and formally valid
- If you meet the formal requirements, they forward your file to the university, which decides
💶 €75 first choice, €30 each extra (same semester)
Official infoVPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation)
uni-assist evaluates your qualification and gives you a certificate — you then apply to the university yourself.
- Request a VPD on My Assist for the specific university
- uni-assist converts your grade to the German scale and issues the VPD
- You upload the VPD on the university's own portal before its deadline
💶 Same uni-assist fees — and allow extra time, you still have a second step
Official infoHochschulstart (DoSV)
National portal for some admission-restricted Bachelor's programmes (e.g. medicine, some NC subjects).
- Register on hochschulstart.de to get your BID and BAN numbers
- Apply via the university portal and/or Hochschulstart as instructed
- Rank your choices and follow the coordinated admission rounds
